What is the working principle of a centrifugal fan?

2026-04-18

Industrial centrifugal blowers refer to those with an outlet pressure of 0.015 MPa to 0.35 MPa. They are widely used in various industrial sectors, including metallurgy, chemical industry, fertilizer, petrochemical, food, building materials, petroleum, mining, textiles, gas stations, pneumatic conveying, and wastewater treatment. According to their structure and working principle, industrial centrifugal blowers can be classified into centrifugal blowers and Roots blowers.

Basic Working Mechanism: A centrifugal fan is a fluid machine that operates on the principle of centrifugal force. Its core working process is based on Newton's second law and the principle of energy conversion. When the motor drives the impeller to rotate at high speed, gas enters axially under the action of the blades, is accelerated by centrifugal force, and is discharged radially. During this process, the static pressure energy and kinetic energy of the gas increase simultaneously. The diffuser (volute) further converts the kinetic energy into static pressure energy, ultimately forming a stable airflow output.

The basic working process of a centrifugal fan can be divided into four key steps:

1) Gas Intake: When the impeller starts rotating, the gas in the central region of the impeller is thrown towards the outer edge, causing a pressure drop in the central region and forming a negative pressure zone. External gas, under atmospheric pressure, is drawn into the center of the impeller through the inlet.

2) Gas Acceleration: The gas entering the impeller is accelerated along the curved surface of the blades by the force of the blades. Due to centrifugal force, the gas is thrown towards the outer edge of the impeller, significantly increasing its kinetic energy.

3) Energy Conversion in Centrifugal Blowers: The gas, accelerated and thrown towards the outer edge of the impeller, enters the volute. The flow channel design of the volute causes the gas to gradually decelerate during flow. According to Bernoulli's principle, as the air velocity decreases, its kinetic energy is converted into static pressure energy.

4) Gas Discharge in Centrifugal Blowers: Finally, the pressurized air is discharged from the blower outlet and delivered to the target application point. The main function of the centrifugal blower volute is to collect the gas thrown out by the impeller and guide it to the outlet, while reducing gas turbulence and energy loss through a reasonable flow channel design.
